I just ordered an Avet SX Raptor, and I must say that I'm nothing short of anxious. I need a blank accommodate the such an awkward reel. The reels weight is 17 ounces and the size is similar to the regular SX. I had a problem matching up my old SX and ended up settling for something that I really didn't want.
This time around I'm looking for a 7'6 to 9' rod. Which blank would you go with? My requirements are as follows: -I'd like a light, sensitive blank that has sensible durability. (I know light and durable can contradict each other) -I'd also like to spend less than $120 if possible. (I also know that inexpensive and good blanks can contradict) -I'd also like the most warp-resistant blank possible. So far I have considered the Calstar 800M, MHX L905 and CRB GIS80H. I have always liked Calstar because they seem fairly warp-resistant and bulletproof. How about MHX and CRB? Any other recommendations? I have always used Fuji SiC's and I am getting "SiC" of the guide feet rusting. I was considering American Tackle "ring-lock" Titans. How are they? Ring or foot failure? Are these like SiC's as far as casting and braid-capability are concerned? Last but not least... I have always used Flexcoat as epoxy. Which build is better for a fully-finished graphite build? Will High build make my rod noodley and parabolic? What do you like better? P.S.- I plan on fishing 30lb. braid as backing and 20-25 mono on top... Thanks, Brett |

The Raptor can do in the low 20#'s of drag easily. If you are fishing 20-25# topshot, normally you may use up to 10# of drag, if that. Its mismatched IMHO to the reel, which can do over 17# at strike! Put 65# braid on that sucker! I did up a Super Seeker Hercules 6' 40-80# that a customer used for AJ in Florida and loved it. He felt the pair was very light and matched up well. The 800M is a 20-50# rated blank, so fishing 25# mono, you won't get much of the rod into play. If your going to fish 25# mono, get a rod rated to maybe 30 or 40# or so, that way you can bump it up a bit if needed, but still be in the sweet spot for the rod at 25#. Getting a rod that heavy and a reel that strong, then using that light mono on it doesn't match up IMHO.
I would look at some of the lighter Calstars, Super Seekers, Phenix Black Diamond, etc. The Am Tack titanium frames are used by Seeker and get very good reviews on several forums. They use a Nanolite ring which rates a tad under SiC for hardness, but is supposed to be very close. I've use the Virtus w/o a problem with braided lines. Any wrapping or epoxy (or heavy guides) will make a rod feel a tad softer, but turning it "noodley and parabolic" won't happen from that alone! Just use a thinner coating of the Hi build if you are worried about weight, or use single foot fly guides with a Forhan lock! |
