If I use a rubber/neoprene winding check can I put finish epoxy over top of it to seal and protect it?

Yes you can, in fact I have noticed that with the finish over the top it keeps it from deteriorating so quickly from the elements.

Todd Just as a extra pre-cautionery measure, clean the rubber or vinyl check with alcohol, so not contaminants are lurking on the check. Those would repel finish, if they are present. -------------------- Bob McKamey

In addition to Bob McK's comments, I'd suggest using a bit of glue to cement the winding check to the foregrip. Make sure none of the glue seeps out of the edges.
This will help to keep the winding check from moving under the stress of a fight with a fish, and so it will help to keep the joint where your finish goes over it and meets the foregrip from separating. Uncle Russ Calico Creek Rods |
