I am building some inexpensive rods, using the saanded blanks from Mud Hole.
What can I use to put a gloss finish on them? I have tried using Flex Coat light epoxie but cant seem to get it on smooth and thin enough.

I agree with John, use the U-40 Perma-Gloss made by Trondak in Squim, WA.
It will put a gloss on about any surface. It is best to apply it prior to guied placement. If the guides are already on the rod, apply with a brush. If the blank has nothing on it, apply with a sponge or a brown coffee filter. Start at the tip and in one continous motion pull the blank thru the soaked sopnge or filter. Stand it up as close to verticle as you can and let dry.

Works for me that way.

I've been nusing flex coat as well but I thin mine with denatured alcohol.
2 drops of alcohol for each cc of flex coat used.
I use a brush and it goes on like water.

castman you have been lucky it will bite you some day if anything should be used for thinning it is acetone and even then you might have problems, alcohol does not evaporate fast enough, check with either John Anderson or Roger Seiders re thinning Flex coat it is their product

I use Permagloss applied with Testor's modeling brushes. Done this numerous times with excellent results. Usually put 2-3 light coats allowing drying time inbewteen. Permagloss is good stuff and dries very quickly. Downside, it stinks to high heaven. Z.
